This paper investigates the Sicilian red figured pottery attributed by A.D. Trendall to the Borelli Painter – so called from a vase that belonged to the Borelli Bey collection –, whose activity has been dated by the same scholar to the last two decades of the 4th century BC. The research addresses the problem of revising the Sicilian contexts traditionally dated to the age of Timoleon and that of Agathocles, in line with the studies of recent years which highlight the need for a chronological redefinition of many classes of finds (red figured pottery, black-glazed and fine household pottery, figurines). After identifying stylistic and iconographic affinities with the vases of the painters of the Lentini-Manfria Group and having examined the available contextual data, the research hypothesizes that the start of the Borelli Painter’s production should be dated to the third quarter of the 4th century BC.
